Dear Friends,
Power. It can be used for good or ill. We can show our strength in positive or negative ways. Unitarian Universalism is a faith that values using our power within to work for good. As the children’s Sunday Circle added a hammer to our growing toolbox we reflected on our right to use our power to question authority. “I became convinced that non-cooperation with evil is as much a moral obligation as is cooperation with good. No other person has been more eloquent and passionate in getting this idea across than Henry David Thoreau (the famous UU!). As a result of his writings and personal witness, we are the heirs of a legacy of creative protest.” Martin Luther King, Jr, Autobiography, Chapter 2.
As parents we can discuss with our children times when we need to use our power to fight injustice. Questioning authority has played a significant role in many of the reforms that we take for granted today- civil rights, votes for women, child labor laws. Knowing when to question authority and when to follow the rules is a power that we UUs need to examine. Get involved with your children, make a stand. Actions speak so much louder than words!
Faithfully,
Sally
